‘Idol’s’ Adam Lambert makes magic in S.F.

(Posted late yesterday! Great Review from SF Chronicle)

Making an entrance worthy of the celebrity magician Criss Angel, Adam Lambert certainly didn’t look like a reality television castoff at the Warfield on Friday.

Wearing a top hat, fringed overcoat and about a dozen layers of eyeliner, he literally appeared in a puff of purple smoke delivering the slinking set opener, “Voodoo.”

As he pushed his zombie-like dancers around the stage, Lambert hit the first of the night’s many glass-shattering refrains, “You’re the hunter and I’m your prey.” An interesting cross section of grandmas and club kids made up most of the sold-out audience.

Despite his disappointing second-place finish last year on the eighth season of “American Idol,” the 28-year-old San Diego native’s popularity has only rocketed since breaking free of the show. Last week, his 2009 album “For Your Entertainment” topped the 1 million sales mark while offers for movie roles and television specials came flooding into his agent’s office.

So while the current crop of “Idol” alumni struggle to fill seats with their own packaged tour this summer, Lambert had little trouble selling out dates on his big-budget Glam Nation tour, which also included a second concert Sunday with his fellow “Idol” contestant Allison Iraheta and former Michael Jackson guitarist Orianthi once again opening.

Those concerned that Lambert might tone down his act after the uproar caused by his American Music Awards performance (and subsequent banning by the producers of “Good Morning America”) could rest easy.

Lambert put his extensive background in the performing arts to good use during his hourlong Warfield set. He probably would have been more at home at the Orpheum Theatre just down the street.

Lambert’s cover of Johnny Cash‘s “Ring of Fire” dripped with even more stylized pomp than the version he did on the television show. And he could unfurl his full vocal acrobatics on a run through the Lady Gaga-penned “Fever” without having to worry about facing the wrath of Simon Cowell‘s rolling eyes.

The concert’s centerpiece was an acoustic segment made up of the songs “Whataya Want From Me,” “Soaked” and “Aftermath” – all seemingly custom made to reinforce his narrative as a pop outsider storming the gates. “Wanna scream out, no more hiding,” he sang on the last one, milking every word for deep blue melancholy. “Don’t be afraid of what’s inside.”

Given the relatively short set time, the constant stream of musical interludes designed to give Lambert time to slip through his many varied black outfits felt like momentum killers. His brief between-song banter, meanwhile, sounded like it was pilfered from a rock star manual that had been lying backstage since 1986.

But Lambert thundered through the rest of the night with remarkable confidence, leading the charge on “Music Again” and looking like an extra from Duran Duran’s “Wild Boys” video in a particularly fervent take on the new single, “If I Had You.”

The encore, meanwhile, saw Lambert revert to type. Reviving a pair of songs that helped lift him through the ranks on “Idol” – Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” and Led Zeppelin‘s “Whole Lotta Love” – he reminded his fans why they put their faith (and votes) in him in the first place.
